30 Days to Better Jazz Guitar Ebook

30 Days to Better Jazz Guitar CoverAs someone who has studied music most of my life, and spent the last 17 years studying jazz guitar, I know that it’s sometimes hard to find new material to work on, figure out where to go next in our learning path or just open our ears and minds to new ideas on the instrument.

Because of this, I decided to put together a little project, where each day for a whole month I posted a short lesson on a different topic, and throughout the month covered all of the jazz guitar basics such as chords, scales, triads, arpeggios, ear training, repertoire and the ever dreaded sight reading.

If you want to view any/all of these 30 articles, check out the free-online version of the 30 Days to Better Guitar Series.

The goal of this project is to not only give you 30 days of material to practice, but hopefully these articles will open your ears and minds up to new possibilities on the instrument and provide hours, weeks or month of further practicing when the month is over.

After running this series in the summer of 2011, the response I got was extremely positive and the comments I received on these lessons was very encouraging from all of the readers who went through the 30 days of lessons.

Because of this, and due to demand from many readers, I’ve put together an ebook based on this 30 part series, which you can purchase for the low price of $14.99 US (less than 50 cents per lesson and 50% off the list price of $29.99. So grab your copy now!).

The book features all of the original 30 lessons, all of which have been expanded with more than 20 pages of extra musical examples and explanations, in both notation and tab, as well as 5 bonus lessons that have never before been published on my site.

Got a question or comment about this ebook? Visit the 30 Days to Better Jazz Guitar thread in the MWG Forum.

  5. Guy says:

I just found your website and I’m loving it. I’ve been playing guitar for right at two years and I felt things have been getting stale in my practice routine.

After reading your preview material I’ve decided to buy your e-book.

Thanks for many great sessions to come!

    1. Matt Warnock says:

Thanks Guy, hope you enjoy the book!

      1. Guy says:

After only a brief hour with your book I am amazed at the scope of material covered as well as the practicality of the examples that are given, beginning right in Chapter 1.

Being self taught on the guitar, I was amazed right away at how your book brought about an awareness of the lack of organization my routines had fallen into during my nightly practice. Right off the bat I am practicing things that I haven’t been and it has me excited.

I look forward to reporting back with the progress made over the course of the next month.

        1. Matt Warnock says:

Hey Guy, thanks for the kind words, I am glad you are enjoying the book. Feel free to check back anytime and update us about your progress, I would love to hear how you are doing with the book and I’m sure a lot of my website readers would like to hear about your progress ass well. Keep us posted!

  6. Matthew Warnock says:

30 Days to Better Jazz Guitar e-book by Matthew Warnock is an outstanding asset for up-and-coming jazz guitarists, though it covers advanced topics that seasoned players will surly benefit from learning as well. In either case, it is written in a clear, friendly manner, and the chapters are well thought out and filled with notation/TAB examples and links to additional resources. Each daily lesson is highly accessible and perfectly sized for a focused practice session. The book covers the indispensable scales, chords, voicings, arpeggios, motifs, progressions, rhythms, and accents, which characterize both modern and classic jazz guitar playing styles. On top of that, the author offers ample experienced advice on how to get the best out of time spent in the “woodshed” practicing. After 30 days, students will find themselves further down the road to playing in a great musical tradition with many new ideas and perspectives to assist them along the way.

  7. Greg says:

I cannot read standard notation. Do your books have tabulature? thanks, Greg

  8. Greg says:

Sorry about the last question. I found the answer (yes, they do contain tab) in an answer to a question above. I will get the book!

    1. Matthew Warnock says:

No worries, yeah just like my site my ebooks contain both notation and tab for all the examples. Hope you dig the book!

  9. richard v says:

Matt I want to buy the book today and i have a couple of questions-30 days doesn,t seem like enough time to cover all the things in this program. can you give me some explanation as to how we are to proceed?

    1. Matthew Warnock says:

      Hi Richard,
yes, the book is designed to provide more material than just for 30 days. Each day is a different lesson on a different topic that is meant to teach you different ways to solo, comp, play tunes, etc in a jazz guitar context. And then once you’d tried out each lesson you can go back and practice that material for a lifetime if you want. So it’s a collection of lessons to give variety over 30 days, but each lesson can be studied in as much depth as you want and provide you with countless hours of practice room time if you really get into them. Hope that helps.

  10. Roger says:

Matt: I assume this is Mac compatible. How about iPad? Can I download it to a deck top and a lap top-2 downloads?

    1. Matthew Warnock says:

Yeah it is a pdf so you can view it on any ereader and on any computer. Once you download it to your desktop, mac or PC, you can then transfer it to your laptop, iPad, Kindle, etc. Hope that helps!

  11. Idi says:

Does the book come with mp3 versions of the book content. I ask because I have found that to be quite help full.

    1. Matthew Warnock says:

There’s no audio for this book, but it is well explained and easy to follow. My other book has over 100 audio examples, and my new book coming out in June on m7 Bebop Vocabulary will have audio as well.

The book is bigger and better than I imagined!!! Thirty days???.. 10 years of lessons!!!! Thanks ever so much!

Note: My payment went to ” Holly Holmes”, which doesn’t matter to me, I still got the book, but I just wanted to make sure you are getting YOUR money.

Thanks Peter, glad you like the book! Holly is my wife so that’s all good, thanks again!

  14. Jordan says:

Is there a paper copy of the book? Obviously it’ll be more money, but I’d prefer it. I plan to grab it either way, just curious.

    1. Matthew Warnock says:

Hey jordan, thanks for checking out the book! There is no hard copy, but the PDF is printable so you can print individual pages or the whole thing if you want. Enjoy the book!

  16. Paulo says:

Hi, I am interested in learn jazz, i have two questions:
    1. for understanding and praticing the lessons is necessary to know read partitures.?
    2. do you have a spanish version of the book?
Are you interested in the translation of your book, to reach the latinamerica market?

    1. Matthew Warnock says:

Hi Paulo, I think you will need to read some music, tab/notes or chord symbols since lead sheets are written out that way.

But if you have a good ear you can learn from listening to recordings.

I don’t have a Spanish version of the book. I might be interested in that if enough people wanted me to do it.

  17. Khalil says:

Hi Matt, your book seems to be awesome (reading all these responses). I am very interested in getting the book, but I would like to know if it requires previous knowledge of jazz. I play blues with some jazz chords here and there, but I would like to learn jazz guitar. Is this book suitable for me? Thanks and keep up the good work!

    1. Matthew Warnock says:

The book is designed to provide material for the beginner player, as well as intermediate. So some of the material will be too advanced at first, but the rest of the book will be able to teach you the basics and allow you to work up to the harder lessons as well. Cheers.

I bought the e book, but never know when I’m using it or when I’m using the free stuff. In fact I can’t find where I saved the link to the ebook that I purchased. Do I need to purchase it again, or how do I find it? Is there a password I need to log into it?

    1. Matthew Warnock says:

There is no link for the book, it was sent as a PDF file to save on your computer. If you can’t find it, just send me an email through the contact form on my site and I can send you a new copy.

  25. Willis Crenshaw says:

I just purchased The 30 days course and I cannot get it again after the download. You mentioned it was transmitted by a PDF file, but how do you find it. I was reading some of the comments on your offer and it seems like the way it’s currently set up is not working. Let me know how to solve my problem so I can get started.

    1. Matthew Warnock says:

Hi Willis, sometimes the download connection will time out, it’s very rare but it does happen. I sent you an email with the book, so just check your email and it will be waiting there for you. Cheers.

  26. claude says:

A title such as “learn jazz guitar in 30 days” is equivalent to “learn Mandarin in 30 days”. It is also absurd. While I do enjoy Warnock’s outputs online, this kind of silly statement diminishes the value of this site.

    1. Matthew Warnock says:

Hi Claude. I think you just misread the title. It doesn’t say “Learn Jazz Guitar in 30 Days” it says “Play Better Jazz Guitar in 30 Days.” The course is designed to make you a better player over 30 days by introducing you to the different aspects of playing and studying jazz guitar.

No one can learn jazz guitar in 30 days, BUT, you can increase your ability and push your playing forward in 30 days of practice and study, opening up avenues for further study and development in the process.

That’s what this book is about. Sorry if you were confused by the title, didn’t mean it to be misleading.

  27. 5slopoke9 says:

Is this new book an upgrade to the original “Pay better Jazz Guitar in 30 days”? if so will there be an upgrade price for those of us who bought the first edition ?

    Thanks Matt

    1. Matt Warnock says:

Hey, which book do you mean? I am working on a new book called “Building Bebop Vocabulary Vol 2: Unaltered 7th Chords” right now, and that is a completely different book from this one. Each of my books is a stand alone book, so not an upgrade from another book, so they are meant to be purchased and used separately. hope that helps!

  28. Holger Schie says:

    great site

  29. Kevin says:

I’ve just bought your 30 days ebook and I have a question regarding modes. I know the major scale in all 5 positions and am quite good at playing it from all tonic points on the neck, for instance in G. Rather than learn new shapes, could I learn how to play each mode starting from a different point on the neck and using the same major shapes, bascially starting and finishing on a different tonic? So for A dorian I would start and finish on the fifth fret of the bottom E, for C mixolydian at the fourth note of the G major scale. I could theoretically (to my thinking) do this from any point on the neck, and it would help me memorise the notes on the neck. This seems more intuitive to me, but am I missing something by doing it this way or is my thinking flawed?

    1. Matt Warnock says:

      Hey Kevin

You can do it that way. It might get confusing over a tune that has fast changes, because you are thinking about the parent shape and then taking to mode from there. But, if you are playing over a modal tune then I think it would be a fine way to think of modes if it helps you get through them quicker and easier.

  30. Kevin says:

sorry, it would be D mixo at the the fifth note of the G major scale.

  31. Andy says:

Hi Matt…I just noticed that Harmonic Minor Modes is listed twice above. Are these the same lessons?

    1. Matt Warnock says:

Hey Andy. One of the lessons is on Harmonic Minor and the other is on Harmonic Major. Hope that clears it up!

  32. Andy says:

Hi Matt, sorry I should have been clearer…I’m seeing 2 lessons for Harmonic Minor: bullet points #4 and #12 above. Harmonic Major is bullet #18.

    1. Matt Warnock says:

Hey Andy, #4 is Melodic Minor and #12 is Harmonic Minor so just two different scales but similar lessons, one for each scale system. Cheers!

  33. Dave says:

Just wondering if there is an app for the ipad for the 30 Days book? I purchased the book for my PC and Mac but I’d like to practise using my ipad so I don’t disturb my wife in our computer room.

The book is fabulous, thanks very much. Dave.

    1. Matt Warnock says:

Hi Dave, glad you dig the book. You can open the PDF on your ipad no problem. Email if you have any issues. mattwarnockguitar@gmail.com

  34. Wojciech "Bemol" Moczulski says:
