Welcome to my new series of articles called “Anatomy of a Tune.” The premise for this series is that we will take a jazz standard, analyze the harmonic material, and then dig into using the tune itself for the basis of improvisation, comping or chord melody, focusing on one specific idea for each tune.
Each tune will offer a specific challenge and set of learning material that you can focus on when learning that particular tune. As well, all of the concepts covered in each article are applicable to many other tunes and improvisational situations, so you will never just learn one idea for one tune, each idea can easily be transferred to any tune you are working on.
I hope you enjoy this series and if you have any suggestions for future tunes that you would like to see covered just let me know in the comments section below or send me a note through my contact page.
I like the anatomy of a tune would make a good book just 10 jazz tunes. Like me knownchors and subs licks and scales
and arpswhen I try toplay a tune and improvise i may get lost.
Thanks Mike, I’m look at doing a book on the subject, probably can’t use the tunes due to publishing rights, but I can do all the analysis stuff and approaches to comping, soloing and chord melody etc in the book. I’m hoping to work on it this summer and have it out later this year.
