As a teacher, I have often had students ask for help getting more of a Modern Jazz Guitar flavor into their playing. They have often spent a lot of time studying Bebop and Hard Bop, and are ready to move on to a more contemporary approach to the instrument and to their soloing. Over the years I’ve found that certain approaches are great for moving one’s playing from a traditional to more modern sound, while not ignoring or excluding what we’ve already learned in our study of Bebop and Hard Bop.
Below are a series of articles that I’ve written that explain and present my approach to studying and learning Modern Jazz Guitar. This is not by any means a complete approach, but there is enough material here to keep anyone busy for years on end. Also, as with any student of jazz, I’m learning more about the genre and how to study and teach it every week, so check back for new articles and lessons being posted on my site, and linked to from this page for easy bookmarking.
